The Mt Kembla summit is 534 metres above sea level. The village below the summit, is a historic old mining village known for the mining disaster in 1902 which claimed the lives of 96 miners. The disaster was one of the worst disasters of Australian history, until the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria.
The Mt Kembla village focuses on the mining disaster while showcasing the history of the local area.
Local Aboriginal legends told of Mount Kembla and Mount Keira being sisters and the Five Islands (off the coast of Wollongong) being daughters of the wind.
